Hedwig-Clara Exner

Recognized for her performances as both a singer and actress from the age of 5, soprano Hedwig-Clara took voice lessons at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with Dr. Kathryn Whitney.

She was introduced to music at age 4, upon the insistence of her mother, who claimed that she was able to “recite any song she was exposed to.” She thereafter performed throughout her childhood in church settings, competitions and school concerts.

Upon graduation, Hedwig-Clara was awarded a scholarship in the arts. Unfortunately, circumstances prevented her from accepting the award, and with great regret, she abandoned her musical studies.

Upon immigrating to Canada, she engaged her creative desires by earning several colour expert certificates from the beauty industry throughout the 1980s and 1990s. However, she eventually decided to go back to college and earn a diploma in Early Childhood Education.

Hedwig-Clara has resided in Victoria for the last 40 years, where she was a Director/Teacher in her own Preschool and where she now runs a Salon and Spa. She has 3 children: Heidi, Christina and a son, Jonathan, who lives in Edmonton. She loves traveling, gardening, hot yoga, the sauna, nutrition, and above all music and singing the classics.

The Winterreise Project marked Hedwig-Clara’s first return to performance in a production since her late teens and she was excited to be performing Schubert’s songs again in this new setting.
